This 60-minute course provides an applied overview on sensory processing and intervention approaches. Effective sensory intervention requires more than a collection of techniques. It demands clear clinical reasoning, an understanding of participation, and careful alignment between intervention approach, context, and goals. This course builds on the theoretical and assessment principles covered in Parts 1 and 2 and focuses on sensory intervention approaches used in paediatric occupational therapy practice. Participants will explore both top-down and bottom-up intervention approaches, with particular attention to Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) and commonly used sensory-based approaches. Top-down approaches are examined in relation to participation-focused intervention, including routines-based intervention, environmental modification, and context-embedded strategies across home, school, and community settings. Bottom-up approaches, including ASI, are explored in terms of their theoretical foundations and core principles. The emphasis throughout is on understanding when, why, and how different intervention approaches are used, rather than on prescriptive protocols, supporting clinicians to make informed, defensible, and child-centred intervention decisions. Ideal for: Clinicians with foundational knowledge of sensory processing and assessment who want to strengthen intervention reasoning and clarify distinctions between sensory intervention approaches.

Dr Michelle Newby, PhD is a recognised leader in paediatric occupational therapy, combining clinical practice, research, teaching, and professional mentoring. She holds a Bachelor of Health Science (Occupational Therapy), a Master of Science with Distinction in Health and Social Research, and a PhD in Occupational Therapy. Her doctoral research investigated sensory processing and developmental challenges in children with Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). With over 25 years of international clinical experience across Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Azerbaijan, and China, Michelle is both a researcher and practising clinician with a specialist interest in complex neurodevelopmental presentations, including autism, ADHD, PANS/PANDAS, Tourette syndrome, developmental coordination disorder, and developmental trauma. She is currently engaged as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, Australia, and continues to provide assessment and intervention for children and families in her clinical practice. An international speaker, Michelle has presented her research and clinical work at conferences in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Brazil, the United States, and Australia. She is also a highly sought-after mentor, providing clinical supervision and professional guidance to occupational therapists across Australia, supporting evidence-based, neurodiversity-affirming, and participation-focused practice.

Excellent, engaging, knowledgeable speaker, clear, etc. Maybe spending less time on the checklists to prepare and more. I would have liked to see examples of therapy (videos), more time on actual therapy and therapy ideas, small group breakout session so that we could discuss our experiences and help each other out, networking with other teletherapists.
