This 60-minute course provides an applied overview of sensory processing. Sensory processing sits at the heart of many participation challenges experienced by children and adolescents, yet many clinicians report limited confidence in applying sensory theory to assessment and intervention in everyday practice. This introductory course provides allied health professionals with a clear, evidence-informed foundation in sensory processing theory using an occupation-focused lens. Core sensory frameworks are explored in relation to contemporary paediatric occupational therapy practice with neurodivergent children. Participants will examine how sensory processing differences present in everyday contexts and how they influence emotional regulation, behaviour, learning, and participation across home, school, and community environments. Emphasis is placed on understanding why children respond the way they do, explicitly linking sensory theory to observable behaviour and occupational performance rather than to prescriptive strategies or generic sensory activities. This course supports the development of a shared professional language for explaining sensory processing differences to families and teams in a neuro-affirming, participation-focused way. Ideal for: Clinicians new to sensory processing, returning to paediatric practice, or seeking a stronger theoretical foundation before progressing to assessment or intervention.

Dr Michelle Newby, PhD is a recognised leader in paediatric occupational therapy, combining clinical practice, research, teaching, and professional mentoring. She holds a Bachelor of Health Science (Occupational Therapy), a Master of Science with Distinction in Health and Social Research, and a PhD in Occupational Therapy. Her doctoral research investigated sensory processing and developmental challenges in children with Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). With over 25 years of international clinical experience across Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Azerbaijan, and China, Michelle is both a researcher and practising clinician with a specialist interest in complex neurodevelopmental presentations, including autism, ADHD, PANS/PANDAS, Tourette syndrome, developmental coordination disorder, and developmental trauma. She is currently engaged as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, Australia, and continues to provide assessment and intervention for children and families in her clinical practice. An international speaker, Michelle has presented her research and clinical work at conferences in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Brazil, the United States, and Australia. She is also a highly sought-after mentor, providing clinical supervision and professional guidance to occupational therapists across Australia, supporting evidence-based, neurodiversity-affirming, and participation-focused practice.

Excellent, engaging, knowledgeable speaker, clear, etc. Maybe spending less time on the checklists to prepare and more. I would have liked to see examples of therapy (videos), more time on actual therapy and therapy ideas, small group breakout session so that we could discuss our experiences and help each other out, networking with other teletherapists. The program was very detailed and discussed scenarios that we may come across in the field. I did not observe any weaknesses in the program. Any questions I had before the program were answered.
