Getting Started with ReadySetConnect Web Hosting

The steps listed below will guide you through the process of getting your web site online and active on our web servers . You do not need to go through step 4 and step 5 but it is recommended in order to get the full use out of your web hosting package. Do not skip step 6. This is equivalent to pushing the ON switch for your web site.

Step 1: Selecting a domain name

This is the most frustrating step! You’ll be surprised how hard it is to find a domain name that hasn’t been registered. Try using words related to your website or company in your domain name. The longer the domain name the more likely it will be available. For example, if run a business called “XYZpixel” that specializes in web design, you should pick a domain name like “XYZpixelWebDesign.com”. The chance that you will find npixel.com by itself is very unlikely. Adding “WebDesign” in the URL may also give you a search engine ranking boost. Avoid adding “-“s in your domain name. Example: XYZpixel-web-design.com. The “-“s will make your domain name harder to remember or repeat verbally.

Currently, we do not offer domain name registration services. We recommend enom.com for cheap domain registrations.

Step 2: Picking a web hosting package
Next you need to decide which web hosting package you want to go with. We have found that our “ConnectOne” web hosting plan provides more than enough resources for many of the web sites out there. If you plan to host more than 3 domain names on your web hosting account, you might consider going with our “ConnectTwo” hosting plan. You may have seen web hosting companies term their plans similiar to "shared web hosting package", "domain name hosting", "php web hosting","cPanel hosting plans", "virtual hosting plans", etc. These all refer to the same thing. Our ConnectOne and ConnectTwo plans fit these terms.

Step 3: Uploading your files to the web server

After you have signed up and received your welcome email, it is now time to upload your website files/web pages to your hosting account. You can do this multiple ways – through our control panel, a FTP client, or through a complete backup restore. You can upload each of your pages through our file manager system located within our control panel. This will definitely work but can sometimes be slower and difficult to work with. The quickest and most common method is through a FTP client. The third way, which won’t work for everyone, is to download a complete backup of your web site at your old hosting provider and re-upload the backup to our control panel. This will only work if your old provider is running Cpanel on their web hosting servers.

When you first log-in to your file system, you will notice several folders. You will want to upload your web site files to either /public_html or /www. /www is just a system link to /public_html. If you upload your files to any of the other main folders, your web site will not be viewable from the internet. Do not play around with any of the other main folders besides /public_html unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you do it incorrectly, your hosting account could become dysfunctional.

Step 4: Restoring your databases.
*If your web site isn’t using any databases, you can skip this step.*
Restoring your MySQL databases can be done easily through our control panel. If you are coming from another cpanel host, you can restore it directly through the “Backup” link under the site management tab. If you only have the database source files, you can restore them through PHPMyAdmin. While in PHPMyAdmin, click the import link and follow the page from there.

Step 5: Setting up an email address
Our web hosting control panel, Cpanel, makes it simple to create an email address. Simply click “Manage Email Accounts” under the Email tab. On that page, click “Add an email address”. From there, input the information it requests and your email address will be active once you click submit. (Once the DNS has propagated – see step 6)

Step 6: Changing name servers – “Going Live”
After the above steps are completed, it is now to direct traffic from your old hosting company to us. In order to do this, you must go to the company you registered your domain name with. They should have provided you with login information for your domain name so that you can manage it through their web site. After you log in, locate the section where you can edit your domains’ name servers (Look for something similar to ‘Manage Domain’). Usually name servers look something like this – nsx.HostingCompany.com and nsy.HostingCompany.com. Change the name servers from what is currently there to the two name servers that are listed in your welcome email. After you have saved the changes, there will be a 24-48 hour propagation period where traffic will bounce between your old host and us. This will clear up after the 24-48 hours.

Your web site should now be live and all traffic should be going to our systems. The above steps will get the main portions of your account operational; however there is much more you can do to with your account. To learn what else you can do, check out the documentation located in your control panel.
