Shared Web Hosting. What is it?

Shared web hosting is the term given to any web hosting account that is placed on a server with multiple accounts. These accounts typically share server resources (CPU, RAM, Disk Space, etc) with all the other accounts on the server. Shared web hosting plans are generally cheaper than other types of hosting because they share these resources with other users. Most people run their websites on “shared hosting” accounts because of the price difference. You could say that shared web hosting is the most common form of hosting because of this.

Will my website work on a shared hosting account?

A lot of website owners out there believe their website(s) need a lot more than they really use. While some websites do need their own dedicated servers, most do not. In fact, 95% of the websites we host use less than half of the resources allotted to them. Shared web hosting is perfect for personal web sites, hobby web sites, small – medium sized business sites, etc. If your website is CPU intensive (large forum and/or high traffic web sites) you might want to consider going dedicated instead. You DO NOT want to go with shared hosting if: you have a business website that is fully dependant on internet sales, have a web site that has over 5,000 visitors a day, or a website that uses over 300GB of transfer a month. The above types of web sites should also be on a dedicated server.

Shared hosting advantages/disadvantages

Shared web hosting advantages:

  • Cost: Shared hosting is the cheapest out of all the web hosting types available
  • Easy: No technical knowledge is required if your site is running on a shared server. Each account is provided with its own Cpanel control panel so that you can control every aspect of your website. If you ever have a problem with your account, technical support is there to help you.
  • Low maintenance: You won’t have to worry about keeping your server up to do, checking security, updating software, etc. All this is handled by our administrators.

Shared web hosting disadvantages:

  • Resources: Shared hosting plans provide less disk space, bandwidth, and speed than a dedicated server can.
  • ne user can affect every user on the server. For instance: if a user is monopolizing the server resources, other users will feel the effect. In this case, their sites might run slower. Keep in mind we always monitor our servers for this reason but sometimes these users can slip by…at least at first.
